Onboarding Improvements, Evolutions V1 & Progress Tracking

December 16 2025

onboarding fakemon regions progress beta

Summary: This update introduces major onboarding improvements, clearer progress tracking, and the first release of Evolutions. A number of ongoing issues have been addressed based on observed usage patterns and community feedback.

✨ New

  • Improved onboarding flow – new users can now choose between creating a full region or jumping straight into Fakémon creation with an Instagram-style grid.
    • You can migrate into a region later to unlock additional features. However migrating back isn't available just yet.
  • Fakémon tiering system – a new progress-based tier system helps guide what to work on next when creating Fakémon. When the explore page eventually is released, only Fakemon of a certain tier will be included. Look out for the stars and tier bar in your Fakemon pages.
  • Region progress bar – gives a clear overview of what’s complete and what still needs attention in your region.
  • Stat templates – use these to help you quickly decide the stats for your Fakemon. The stats scale based on the stage of your Fakemon. So a basic all-rounder will have lower stats than a stage 2 all-rounder etc.
  • Ability search via typing – as you start typing, default abilities will be suggested to you. By clicking on one you get the name and the description. No more having to fill in both fields yourself.
  • Evolutions V1 – basic evolution linking is now live.
    • Fakémon can be linked together once, and updates propagate automatically across all Fakemon in the chain. You can also type the method of evolution. The Evolutions tab is only available when you have more than one Fakemon created. Make sure to leave feedback so that Evolutions V2 is even better. Currently there is only three Fakemon allowed in the chain and the chain only supports linear evolution, i.e. no split evo stuff or fossils etc.
    • Mega Evolutions V1 are now supported for Fakémon that belong to a region, allowing easy linking between base forms and Megas. You will be able to hide Megas from your Fakemon grid at a later date. You can still link megas to the normal evolution chain if you want.

🐞 Fixed

  • Generation 9 moves have been added including moves like Body Press, Double Shock and Alluring Voice etc.
  • Fixed an issue where the periodic grid only showed placeholder gaps between Fakémon cards instead of filling up to the region limit.

⚠️ Known Issues

  • Image uploads may feel slower than usual. I’m actively investigating this.
    • If uploads fail multiple times, you can create Fakémon without images for now.
    • Please leave feedback when this happens so I can track frequency and patterns.
  • Occasional site crashes for some users, reported more frequently on mobile (especially Android).
    • I haven’t been able to reliably reproduce this yet.
    • Desktop is recommended for now, and please make sure you’re signing in with the same Google account.
  • General performance slowdowns may still occur in places — these are on my radar.

🧪 Surveys

  • I’ll begin rolling out short surveys to better understand how creators actually use the platform and where friction still exists. I will reward users who engage with these.

💬 Answering Feedback

  • Beta timeline: I’m aiming to exit BETA around February/March 2026, though this depends on stability and scalability.
    • When BETA ends, the 30 Fakémon limit will become expandable.
  • Custom types in type charts: this is a great idea. I’ve been considering splitting regions into Fakédex, World, Characters, and Items — this feature may fit naturally into a future World section. Keep the suggestions coming.
  • Gen 9 moves: now added — thank you for flagging this.
  • Regional variants: if you suggested this, could you explain a bit more what you meant? I didn't fully understand.

📰 News

  • I’ll be taking a short break from coding for around three weeks while I’m on vacation.
    • If something critical breaks, I may not be able to fix it immediately.
    • For serious issues, please contact me via Reddit or Instagram.
  • Due to the size of this update, there may be a few rough edges — please continue reporting bugs through the feedback tool.

Moveset Importing & Fakédex Layout Updates

December 1 2025

ui fakemon creator-tools

Summary: This update focuses on smoothing out creation workflows and giving creators more control over how their Fakémon and Fakédex grids are displayed. A handful of visual glitches and UX issues were also cleaned up thanks to feedback from early users — please keep sending it in!

✨ New

  • Added Moveset Importing – you can now import level-up moves directly from any existing Fakémon in your region, speeding up evolutions and variants.
  • Introduced Customisable Fakémon Cards, allowing you to pick from multiple layout styles. You can do this via the update region form. See below in the gallery for a more detailed view.
  • Added Fakédex Grid Layout Controls so creators can fine-tune how their regional Fakédex appears. See below in the gallery for a more detailed view. Keep in mind these will work best on desktop and that Periodic mode only works if you have empty slots in your Fakedex.

🛠️ Improved

  • Polished several UI inconsistencies across the Fakémon creation and editing tools.

🐞 Fixed

  • Fixed Shiny image handling in the Update Fakémon form so previews and uploads work consistently.

📝 Notes

Thank you to everyone who shared feedback on these features — it directly influenced this update. I’m actively collecting feature requests and ideas from the beta, so please keep using the in-app feedback tool.

🚨 Why There’s a 30-Fakémon Limit (For Now)

Many people have been asking about the 30-Fakémon limit. The cap is deliberate, and it will only exist during the BETA. When I first launched, thousands of people registered. If everyone had full, unrestricted upload capacity immediately, the platform would have taken a massive hit — image processing and storage are annoyingly expensive at scale.

The purpose of this BETA is to create solid foundations, optimise performance, and make sure the platform can handle large numbers of creators without slowing down or falling over. The limit isn’t about restricting creativity; it’s about making sure the whole application can grow safely and sustainably.

Once the infrastructure is fully battle-tested, higher limits will roll out with the Creator Plan, and the free tier will let you have more than 30 Fakémon. The BETA phase is essential for understanding what users want, so that I can make sure that platform provides that.

Fakédex & Fakémon layout overhaul

November 19 2025

ui creator-tools usability

Summary: Major UI update focused on giving creators a cleaner, more polished Fakédex and Fakémon page experience, with faster access to creation tools. Thank you all for your engagement — we have well over 200 users and regions now, and more than 1,000 Fakémon have been created. 🎉

✨ New

  • Made the Profile, Region and Fakémon pages significantly tidier and more responsive. Don’t forget to finish filling in your profiles and region!
  • Added Templates to help users get started with creating Fakémon faster.
  • Reduced requirements to create a Fakémon – there are fewer form fields to fill in now in onboarding and Create Region.
  • Introduced a more cohesive visual system (spacing, typography, pill components) across region and Fakémon pages.

🛠️ Improved

  • Updated the Fakémon detail page to be much more responsive on mobile.
  • Overhauled TypePills so they behave consistently and look cleaner across the app.

🧪 Coming soon

  • Custom Fakédex grid presets, allowing creators to choose between compact, standard, and spacious layouts.
  • Fakémon card customization, including different layout presets and emphasis styles.
  • Basic evolutions – this has been ready for a while; the remaining work is on the UI side.

Performance pass & groundwork for UI overhaul

October 2025

performance stability infrastructure

Summary: Focused on making the app more stable and responsive, especially around core creation flows and page loads. ⚙️

✨ New

  • Added basic loading states to key flows (region loading, Fakémon listing) to reduce perceived jank.
  • Improved error handling for failed uploads and form submissions.

🛠️ Improved

  • Faster Fakémon grid rendering.
  • Reduced layout shift on region and profile pages, so content feels more stable while loading.
  • Cleaned up inconsistent spacing and typography to prepare for the larger UI overhaul.

🐛 Fixed

  • Resolved issues where images failed silently on bad connections.
  • Fixed a bug where some users would see outdated data after updating Fakémon or profile info.
  • Patched minor visual glitches on mobile where sections overlapped or clipped.

📝 Notes

  • This release was mainly about stability and performance, setting the foundation for the UI changes in November.
  • The crash on some Android 10 devices is still outstanding — it’s on the list to fix.

Beta launch of Fakedex Builder

August 2025

beta launch creator-tools

Summary: First public beta of Fakedex Builder with core creation tools, a basic region profile, and a very rough but functional UI. I also spun up a subreddit so updates and discussion can live in one place, but going forward most changes will be logged here. 🚀

  • First version of the region page, allowing creators to set a region name and show their Fakémon.
  • Basic Fakédex grid showing Fakémon in a simple layout.
  • Basic profile page for creators to claim a username and link their region.

🛠️ Improved
